If you now have a flush mount ceiling light fixture in your kitchen, can you install a semi flush mount without having to make any changes?
A flush mount is when the housing is recessed into the ceiling and the lens is flush w/ the ceiling. A semi flush is when the lens protrudes from the ceiling.

Howdy Diane, a flush mount fixture goes right up against your ceiling. I semi flush also mounts against the ceiling, but usually protrudes down a little before the glass is mounted. Here is an example of each:

If you are changing from a flush mount to a semi flush mount, you shouldn’t have to make any changes other than there might be a ring on your ceiling for the previous fixture. That should come right of with a cloth and some cleaning detergent.
Hope this helps!
