If I take power from the existing ceiling light can I add a switch to this supply giving me the option to have the fan on when the shower is in use if so what kind of pull cord switch will work? or do I need to run a new supply from somewhere else in the house ? I also hope to have the light in the shower work at the same time as the fan (both independently of the main toilet area light hence the need for the switch.

you need to find power that is always on, at a light or fan it is only on when the switch is on so find your nearest outlet and take it frfom that or switch if thier is a nuetrel in thier running threw because you dont need a neutrol at a switch but you need it at a light or fan etc if you can get power and a neutrol you can make a switch light fan combo work

Yes you can run off of the exsisting light in the bathroom. The fan must have local Isolation via a 3pole fan isolator ( http://www.screwfix.com/prods/12319/Electrical/Switches-Sockets/White-Moulded/MK-Range/MK-10A-3-Pole-Fan-Isolator-Sw?cm_mmc=PositionTech-_-Electrical-_-Switches%20and%20Sockets-_-MK%2010A%203%20Pole%20Fan%20Isolator%20Sw&source=aw )to be located away from the bath. The light and fan can be seperatly switched via a pull cord ( http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/MK3191.html ) You must find the permanant live that feeds lights, the neutral and the earth to feed all of this from.

If you are fitting the fan near the shower you would be safer to get a low voltage fan with a pull cord attached and a sensor that will turn the fan on by itself if the room starts to get steamed up. you can use the feed from your existing power source it just needs to be connected to a permanent feed at the light rose.
