    I don’t have a white, a black, and a bare copper ground. I have 3 blacks twisted together, 3 grays twisted together, and a red and brown also twisted together. I think the gray is the hot one because only when the voltage tester is touching the gray does it light up (as long as it’s touching one of the other wires too). What the heck shold I do? thanks.

    As this video and the associated videos provide clear and basic information, you are showing how to install a ceiling fixture in an opening far larger than the light box. Boxes need to be flush and tight with the sheetrock. Sheetrock is a fire barrier and when tight with the box will contain a short and keep sparks from entering the ceiling space above. Your video ignores this most basic safety compliance issue. If the light fixture shorts a fire will occur in the ceiling space above.
