Can I Install a Ceiling Fan Where There Is Currently a Light?

Hi folks,

In my bedroom I have a ceiling light (the kind with a glass cover and 2 light bulbs underneath). I’d like to replace it with a Ceiling Fan that has a light built in.

Is this possible to do without any electrical changes? Do you need an extra set of electrical wires to power the fan along with it’s light? Or, do I need to be worried that the wires in there aren’t good enough for a ceiling fan?

Thanks!

you can do it in most cases. i found this advice guide to be really helpful for choosing and installing a ceiling fan: http://www.csnceilingfans.com/Ceiling-Fan-Buying-Guide-A38.html

hope that helps! good luck!

  3. Absolutely! You can do it! It’s easy- the ceiling fan you purchase will have instructions on how to do it. Be sure to have a friend there to hold the fan while you’re installing- you’ll need an extra hand!

  4. Yep…… just make sure your box will support the weight {35lbs} and vibration.
If it’s a plastic box {unless it is a PVC saddle box which straddles the joist} do not hang fan. You need a metal box that is secure to the structure.
